Outline:
In this lecture series, students gather an overview of modern history and beyond, as Japan entered into a socialist system at full scale, from early modern times beginning with the start of contact with Europe, through so-called “Sakoku” (national isolation) and “Kaikoku” (opening the country to the world). Students will deepen their understanding about Japan gaining independence in international society thanks to predecessors and utilizing their knowledge, the enrichment of socialist society, and further, connections between early modern and modern history and the society of today in which we live.
Style:
Classes will be conducted using worksheets, textbooks, and supplementary materials.
