概要:
It is highly recommended that students enrolling for the class have a TOEIC score of at least 550. Based on a TOEFL sample of topics for writing, students will engage in weekly extemporaneous speeches in order to develop their ability to brainstorm major points and construct a free-form rough outline, to find relevant data, statistics, and/or quotations from the Internet or other sources, and to rehearse and to improve their oratory skills. Specifically, each week students will engage in a lottery of topic selection based on TOEFL data, will spend 5 minutes brainstorming their topics and creating free-form rough outlines of their ideas, will spend the next 5 minutes researching their topics, and the final 5 minutes rehearsing their speeches. After this 15 minute time period, students will take turns coming to the front of the classroom to give their speeches with their classmates and the teacher as audience members. Each speech will be no longer than 5 minutes. Students will also practice and engage in three speech contests in which their skill in persuasive, motivational, and informative oratory competence will be improved. Students in this course will be provided with information concerning speech contest events held outside of school and will be strongly encourage to participate in those events.

The objective of this course is to provide students with many opportunities to practice creating and giving English-language speeches based on the well-established pedagogical method of extemporaneous speaking, as well as to offer students practice creating and engaging in persuasive, motivational, and informative speeches.
<到達目標の評価方法と基準>
Students’ ability to brainstorm major points and construct a rough outline, to find relevant data, statistics, and/or quotations from the Internet or other sources, to rehearse and to improve their oratory skills, and to improve ability to create and give persuasive, motivational, and informative speeches, will be evaluated through three speech contests. Students will have attained the goals provided that they have earned 60% of the total points possible for this course.
