Course Objectives

 This course is positioned as an introductory subject, so no prior knowledge of law is required. However, since law is a study that is closely related to the real world, students are expected to pay attention to current topics on a daily basis. The instructors are also expecting to have interactive classes and may ask students to speak actively. Base on students' active learning attitude, the course objectives are as follows:
 In this course, we will aim to acquire basic knowledge of law, including the subject, purpose, and methodology of law. After that, we will examine the system of the positive laws and acquire basic knowledge of the Constitution, the Penal Code, and the Civil Code through the analysis of specific cases and important judicial cases. We will also deepen our understanding of international public law, which is used to govern the right-to-obligation relationship between states. Finally, the goal is to develop the ability to legally examine the various incidents and events occuring in modern society.

Teaching Method

Outline:
 The purpose of this course is to understand the basic concepts of law and legal thinking and to think about social and legal issues through important themes in social life. The student will also study various laws in Japan in connection with important matters such as basic human rights.
Style:
The course is centered on lectures using handouts and blackboard but the students are encouraged to speak actively in order to make the classes more interactive.

Notice:
 The basic concepts of law are systematically explained in this course, but the themes of each class and the order in which they are presented may be changed depending on the students' understanding.
 This course's content will amount to 90 hours of study in total. These hours include the learning time guaranteed in classes and the standard self-study time required for pre-study / review, and completing assignment reports.
Students who miss 1/3 or more of classes will not be eligible for a passing grade.

1st Guidance: What is law?
Learn about the concepts and classifications of laws.
Understand that our world is composed by several kinds of laws superimposed.
2nd History of law
Learn about the historic evolution of law.
Understand how the laws around us were born.
3rd Application and application of law
Learn about sources , the structure and interpretation of law.
Understand that there are different forms of laws and that the meaning of the language of law is not necessarily one, but depends on the way it is interpreted.
4th Law and morality
Learn about the relationship between law and morality, including their overlapping and different aspects.
Learn about the relationship between law and morality through discussion.
5th Law and trials (civil judicial system)
Learn about the civil judicial system.
Understand how it will proceed if we become a party to a trial.
6th Law and trials (criminal judicial system)
Learn about criminal trial system.
Following the last lesson, understand how it will proceed if we become a party to a trial.
7th Introduction to the Constitution (basic principles of the Constitution)
Learn about the basic principles of the Constitution of Japan (sovereignty of the people, respect for fundamental human rights, and pacifism).
Understand the fundamental principles of the Constitution, which is the basic law of the nation and is placed above all other Japanese laws.

Learn the overall structure of various human rights provisions in the Constitution.

10th Human rights in the constitution: Civil liberties
Learn about the civil liberties that the Constitution guarantees.
Understand the basic concepts of civil liberties.
11th Human rights in the Constitution: Social rights
Learn about the social rights that the Constitution guarantees.
Understand the basic concepts of social rights.
12th The basic principles of the Penal Code
Learn about the function of the Penal Code and the necessary conditions for a crime.
Understand how an act is legally formed as a criminal offense.
13th Basic principles of the Civil Code
Learn the basic principles of property law and family law.
Understand that my human promise in daily life can constitute a civil code agreement.
14th International society and law (fundamentals of international law)
Learn the basics of international law governing relations between states.
Law applies not only to individuals, but also to countries. Understand the basics of international law.
15th International society and law (law of war)
Learn about the basic principles of the law of war, which is applicable codes in the event of armed conflict.
In armed conflict (war), laws different from peace time will apply. Understand the basics of the law of war
