Teaching Method

Outline:
As described in the course textbook, this course is "designed to create a lively, student-centered classroom where learners do the talking. Topical group discussions and problem-solving approaches help increase students' abilities to communicate in English in a confident and effective manner.
Style:
Each lesson will include vocabulary and expression building activities, plenty of conversation practice, helpful tips for learning language and conversation skills, a problem-solving task, and a short presentation. Lessons 7 and 15 will provide time for students to present role plays and projects in groups. In addition, during the mid-term and final exam weeks, students will take a two-minute individual speaking test similar to the sample tests in the six units covered in the textbook prior to the exam week. In order to make sure that students do their weekly vocabulary and expressions homework, timed quizzes will be given at the beginning of class during the "Vocabulary Review." On days that there is not a quiz, students will show or turn in their homework for a grade.
Notice:
Active participation in English is essential for completing this course successfully. Participation is 25% of the final course grade. During this class, being more than 15 minutes late, doing coursework for other professors, sleeping, talking out-of-turn at length, playing smart phone games, and any similar actions that distract one's focus away from class may result in a recorded absence and/or a poor participation grade.
Students who miss a timed quiz or an opportunity to turn in homework on time due to a late arrival or absence will receive a grade of 0 points for that homework or quiz. If the student wants to make up the missed work, a second chance will be provided in late February 2020 to participate in a make-up class and to turn in late work for less than full credit.
