Course Objectives
Learning purposes :
To broaden one's horizons and enhance one's thinking skills through the interpretation and appreciation of literary works. To understand how modern writers depicted different cultures and to deepen our understanding of different cultures. Students will also deepen their understanding of Japanese culture by understanding other cultures and comparing them with Japanese culture.
Course Objectives :
1. To develop the ability to think from multiple perspectives and to think flexibly by reading works and literature.
2. To be able to have their own opinions and ideas about how to deal with Japanese culture and other cultures, and to be able to explain them in their own words.

Course outline :
To understand how Japanese people at that time looked at other cultures through the appreciation of works and travelogues by modern writers that are set in foreign countries. Through comparisons between modern and contemporary cultures, and between Japan and other cultures, students will reevaluate their own culture and consider how to deal with other cultures.

Course method :
Reading of the works, lectures and exchange of opinions about the works and authors. Themes will be set for each content, and assignments and reports will be given.
Grade evaluation method :
Assignments (50%) + Report (50%).
No regular examination.

Precautions on the enrollment :
This is a "class that requires study outside of class hours". Classes are offered for 15 hours per credit, but 30 credit hours are required in addition to this. Follow the instructions of your instructor for these studies.
Course advice :
As a preparatory study, research and understand the relationship between Japan and other Asian countries in the early 20th century. Students are expected to actively participate in class and make an effort to improve their own expressive ability. Students should be exposed to a variety of texts on a regular basis and practice thinking flexibly, as well as strive to increase their knowledge of Japanese literature and develop an interest in other cultures.

Attendance advice :
If you are late for the start time, you will be treated as absent after 20 minutes.
Participate actively in classes and submit assignments on time.
