Course Objectives

To understand the importance of English in the fields of science and engineering. To understand common problems associated with using technical vocabulary in specialist fields.To understand the importance of audience awareness and role it plays in shaping vocabulary choice and style. To develop effective strategies for learning technical vocabulary in specialist fields. To learn thesis sentence formation. To learn how to develop a paragraph structure. To learn how to logically link paragraphs. To explain methods and procedures. To write effective definitions or explanations. To explain information in tables and figures. To write effective conclusions. To write a summary and an abstract in English. To become confident reading professional papers in English.

Teaching Method

Outline:
By first understanding the role audience plays in professional or academic writing, the students will gain a better ability to choose appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures to relay the information they want to communicate.
Style:
Much of this class will focus on global concerns in writing: vocabulary choice, sentence-level meaning, paragraph structure, and the linking of paragraphs and ideas into a logical whole. As such, the class will begin with vocabulary, and end with the completion of compositions in English.
Notice:
Participation(20%) + Assignments(50%) + Quizzes (30%) = 100%

3rd UNIT 2: What is a Paragraph Develop a paragraph in English, with a clear thesis sentence, supporting sentences, and concluding sentence.
4th UNIT 3: Essay Understand the basic structure of an essay.
5th UNIT 4: Essay Develop an essay in English, with an introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and concluding paragraph.
6th UNIT 5: Process Learn the vocabulary and grammar necessary to clearly explain a series of events and their logical connections.
7th UNIT 6: Process Express a series of events and their logical connections in English, using appropriate sequencing language.
8th UNIT 7: Definition Compose both simple and extended definitions of key technical terms.
4th Quarter
9th UNIT 8: Definition Compose both simple and extended definitions of key technical terms.
10th UNIT 9: Classification Catalogue and relate items within a specialist field.
